The Box Chevy: An American Icon

The 1977-1990 Chevrolet Impala and Caprice, affectionately known as the "box Chevy" for their squared-off body lines, have become one of the most popular platforms in custom car culture. At Whip Kingz, we see incredible box builds every week, and the creativity never stops impressing us.

Whether you want to build a laid-out lowrider, a lifted donk, a clean street cruiser, or a performance machine, the box Chevy can do it all. This guide covers everything you need to know to build your own.

Finding Your Box

The first step is finding the right car. Box Chevys were produced in huge numbers, so they are still relatively easy to find. However, not all boxes are created equal.

What to Look For:

  • Rust-free body and frame (southern cars are typically cleaner)
  • Straight body panels with minimal accident damage
  • Complete interior with all trim pieces
  • Running drivetrain (even if it needs work)
  • Clean title and documentation

Where to Find Them:

  • Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist
  • Estate sales and auctions
  • Word of mouth in the car community
  • Specialty dealers who focus on G-bodies

Budget $3,000 to $8,000 for a solid starting point. Cleaner examples with desirable options like the Landau roof or sport package will cost more.

Engine and Drivetrain Options

The stock small block 305 or 350 in most boxes is reliable but not exciting. Upgrading the drivetrain opens up a world of possibilities.

Popular Engine Swaps:

  • LS swap: Modern power and reliability in a classic package
  • Built 350/383 stroker: Traditional small block with serious output
  • Big block 454/496: When you want that old school rumble

The 700R4 or 4L60E automatic transmission handles most builds well. For serious power, the 4L80E is the go-to swap. Manual transmission swaps are possible but require more modification.

Suspension: Choose Your Style

This is where you decide what kind of box you are building.

Lowrider/Laid Out: Hydraulic or air bag suspension lets you lay the body on the ground and then raise it up to drive. This style originated in the West Coast lowrider scene and has become hugely popular with box Chevys.

Donk/Lifted: Lift kits and big wheels turn the box into a head-turning statement piece. Proper donk builds use engineered lift kits that maintain safe handling characteristics.

Pro-Touring: Coilover suspension, tubular control arms, and big brakes transform the box into a corner-carving machine. This style is growing rapidly as people discover how capable these cars can be.

Clean Stock: Sometimes the best approach is keeping it stock or near-stock. A clean, well-maintained box Chevy with subtle upgrades has timeless appeal.

Wheels Make the Statement

Wheel choice defines the character of your build more than almost any other modification.

For Lowriders: 13 or 14-inch wire wheels (Daytons, Zeniths) are traditional For Donks: 24 to 30-inch forged wheels from brands like Forgiato and Asanti For Pro-Touring: 18 to 20-inch wheels with sticky tires For Clean Builds: Stock rally wheels or period-correct aftermarket options

Whatever style you choose, make sure the wheels are properly sized for the tire and suspension setup. Incorrect fitment causes handling problems and premature wear.

Paint and Body

The box body style is a perfect canvas for custom paint. The flat surfaces and clean lines show off paint quality exceptionally well.

Popular Approaches:

  • Single-stage candy colors with metal flake
  • Two-tone combinations following the body lines
  • Themed wraps or paint for donk builds
  • Factory-correct colors for restoration builds

Budget at least $5,000 for quality paint and body work. Show-quality paint jobs can easily exceed $15,000.

Interior Comfort

Do not neglect the interior. A beautiful exterior with a rough interior is a missed opportunity.

Upgrades to Consider:

  • Custom upholstery in leather or quality vinyl
  • Modern audio system with retro styling
  • Upgraded HVAC for actual comfort
  • Custom steering wheel
  • Modern gauges or rebuilt factory clusters
