Why the 1971 Chevelle Defines an Era

The 1971 Chevelle SS convertible represents the peak of American muscle car design. It was the last year of the true high-performance era before emissions regulations changed everything. At Whip Kingz, the 1971 Chevelle holds a special place – it embodies everything we love about classic American iron.

This particular build started as a numbers-matching SS396 convertible, but our client had bigger dreams. He wanted a car that could cruise the streets of Atlanta on Saturday night and then hit the drag strip on Sunday. We were happy to make that happen.

The Heart of the Beast: 572 Cubic Inches

The original 396 was strong, but our client wanted legendary. We sourced a Chevrolet Performance ZZ572 crate engine – 572 cubic inches of pure American muscle producing 620 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. This is the kind of power that pins you back in the seat and does not let go.

Supporting this monster required serious upgrades:

  • Tremec TKX 5-speed manual transmission
  • McLeod twin-disc clutch
  • Strange Engineering 9-inch rear end with 3.70 gears
  • Custom aluminum driveshaft

The exhaust exits through custom headers into a Flowmaster Super 44 system. The sound is absolutely intoxicating – that classic big block rumble that makes crowds gather wherever you park.

Suspension and Handling

Power means nothing if you cannot put it to the ground. We partnered with Detroit Speed to install their complete front subframe and rear suspension system. Adjustable coilovers at all four corners let the owner dial in the perfect stance for cruising or cornering.

Wilwood six-piston brakes up front and four-pistons in the rear provide the stopping power this car deserves. With this much horsepower on tap, you need brakes that can handle repeated hard stops without fade.

The Color of Champions

Choosing the right color for a build this significant required careful thought. We landed on a custom shade of dark cherry pearl that we mixed specifically for this car. In direct sunlight, it explodes with depth and metallic flake. Under clouds, it appears almost black. It is the kind of paint that photographs never quite capture – you have to see it in person.

The convertible top is a saddle tan canvas that complements the exterior perfectly. When the top is down, the matching saddle leather interior is on full display.

Interior Craftsmanship

Speaking of the interior, this is where the build truly becomes a Whip Kingz signature piece. Full custom leather throughout in a two-tone saddle and black combination. The original gauge cluster was rebuilt and integrated with a hidden digital display for monitoring the modern engine management system.

A custom center console houses the gear shifter and provides storage for modern conveniences. The RetroSound system delivers premium audio while looking completely period-correct.

Wheels That Complete the Look

This Chevelle rolls on 18-inch Forgeline ML3C wheels in brushed gunmetal. The sizes are staggered – 18x8 up front and 18x10 in the rear – giving the car an aggressive stance that hints at its capabilities. Mickey Thompson street radials provide the grip needed to handle all that power.

Living the Dream

This build took fourteen months from start to finish, but the result is a car that exceeds expectations in every way. It has been featured in multiple magazines, won numerous awards, and most importantly, it gets driven. Our client puts serious miles on this car every summer, and that is exactly how it should be.

At Whip Kingz, we build cars to be enjoyed. Trailer queens have their place, but there is nothing like seeing a build you created actually living its best life on the open road.
